大量のプラスチックゴミが海に流れ出る

プラスチックは驚くほど丈夫で、自然に返ることはありません。海に流れ込むプラスチックゴミは年間500万〜1,300万トンとも言われていて、自然分解されないためずっと海に残ることになります。2050年には海中に漂うプラスチックゴミの重さが海中にいる魚の重さを越えるとも推定されています。

ポイ捨て、屋外に放置されたプラスチックゴミが雨や風によって運ばれて河川に入り、海に流れ着いてしまいます。そして潮の流れなどによって遠くに運ばれ、世界中を漂うようになります。

マイクロプラスチック問題

「マイクロプラスチック」とは5mm以下のプラスチックのカケラのこと。現在51兆個ものマイクロプラスチックが海を漂っているとも言われています。マイクロプラスチックの定義は色々ですが、一番多いのはプラスチックが劣化することで発生するもの。海にあるプラスチックゴミは紫外線や波浪により少しずつ劣化して小さくなっていきますが、その小さな破片が自然に返ることはありません。

このマイクロプラスチックを海洋生物が摂取してしまい、消化器官を閉塞させてしまうことでその個体が死に至ることが問題になっています。また、マイクロプラスチックは残留性勇気汚染物質を吸着させやすいという性質もあります。マイクロプラスチックをプランクトンが食べ、それが食物連鎖を通じて、プランクトン→魚類→人類へと有害物質が蓄積されてしまう可能性も指摘されてきています。

Microplastics continue to accumulate on our shores and are only increasing as time progresses. By utilizing the BSD (buoyancy separation device) I have created and the DSC (debris separation chsmber) method I discovered, we can remove, separate and quantify this debris that is washing on our shores. By separating it into different size categories it allows us to visually understand the impact that this is having on our ecosystem and the marine and avian species that are ingesting it.
